ST. LOUIS – Missouri Baptist men's tennis played fantastic against a highly-skilled McKendree team over the weekend, but suffered a 9-0 loss to the NCAA Division II squad.
Missouri Baptist began the match looking to continue a winning trend from the Spartan No. 1 doubles team of Drew Morris and Mike Rubinelli, but the team never quite got going. McKendree's team of Gabor Toth and Luciano Misitrano defeated MBU's top team 8-2 and set the stage for the remainder of the match.
Conner Stevenson and newcomer Tanner Morris made it extremely interesting in No. 2 doubles for Missouri Baptist. Barnabas Toth and Fabio Tscitiya of McKendree proved to have just enough to beat Stevenson and Morris to win 8-6.
The Spartans went down 3-0 after a loss at No. 3 doubles as the match transitioned to singles. In the first match, MBU made a play for a big upset. Sophomore Drew Morris faced Gabor Toth in No. 1 singles and Toth was a heavy favorite. The senior from Hungary had never lost in singles in his collegiate career. Morris made a bid to end that streak.
The Kirkwood, Mo., native lost 6-4, 6-4, but played excellent tennis throughout against an experienced senior, showcasing the talent that Missouri Baptist will have this season.
The top three matches were all extremely competitive. Misitrano took on MBU's Rubinelli at No. 2 and held-on to a 6-4, 6-4 victory. At No. 3, Connor Stevenson also lost in straight sets 6-4, 6-3, but played well against Barnabas Toth, the McKendree senior.
Missouri Baptist will have the chance to rebound as early as Saturday. MBU is scheduled to play Judson University on Saturday at home.
