ST. LOUIS – Missouri Baptist men's tennis struggled against two very talented teams over the weekend. The Spartans lost 9-0 to both Bethel and Martin Methodist, gaining valuable experience against some of the better teams in the NAIA.
In the first match, MBU took on No. 24 Bethel, who is likely to move to the Top 10 this week after two victories against teams in the Top 10. Bethel was dominant in this match and swept MBU in every match.
Mike Rubinelli was the lone Spartan to earn more than one point in singles play. The senior dropped his No. 2 singles match 6-2, 6-2.
Much was the same in the Saturday match against Martin Methodist, though No. 1 singles nearly pulled-out a big win. Drew Morris and Rubinelli went head to head against Ramiro Vargas and Alegardro Yaner. The team from MBU played very tough tennis, but lost 8-6 to begin the match.
No. 3 doubles was also close but ended with the same result. Connor and Cole Stevenson lost a tight 8-6 decision to Daniel Cermirzian and Farith Lozareo and put the team in a 3-0 hole. Martin Methodist won in straight sets in every singles match and sent the Spartans packing with their second loss of the weekend.
Missouri Baptist will get back to it on Tuesday when the team will travel up the road to UMSL to take on the Tritons.
