ST. LOUIS – [BOX SCORE] Missouri Baptist took full advantage of its chance to payback Ottawa University. After the Braves delivered the reigning NAIA champs a loss to open the season, Missouri Baptist turned the tables Tuesday night with a 3-1 win.
Mico Janicijevic led the way for Missouri Baptist (9-2, 3-1) after posting 21 kills on 33 swings. Eight of the 21 came in set one, a set the Spartans won 25-18. MBU led just 17-15 before they pieced together a huge run to end the set. MBU ended on an 8-3 run and hit a set-high .542. Kyle Foley finished the night with 47 assists.
Ottawa proved it wouldn't go down quietly in set two. Led by Daniel Jacobs, the Braves broke away from MBU mid-set and eventually led 19-12. The Spartans couldn't string together points and fell 25-17. Ottawa hit .552 in the set and MBU just .276.
Those percentages would change in the final two sets. The Spartans would take both set three and four, 25-16 and 25-14. Ottawa had a negative attack percentage in both sets. The Braves never led in set three, as MBU quickly doubled them up 10-5. Cameron Hibbler, who finished with eight kills on the night, and Donald Flemming (five kills) both had big moments throughout.
The margin of victory widened with each set. Ottawa once again never led and the Spartans won 25-14. Foley spent seven straight points at the service line and pushed a 10-7 Spartan lead to 16-8. A kill from Daniel Prada ended the match. Prada had a big night with 12 kills on 22 swings and added seven digs. Robert Hall led MBU defensively with 11.
The Spartans have a day off before traveling to Iowa to take on Morningside. The match is set for 7:00pm.
