ST. LOUIS – Missouri Baptist shortstop Culver Plant signed with the Southern Illinois Miners Friday afternoon. The Miners play in the independent Frontier League, a 12-team profesional baseball league that operates throughout the Midwest.

Plant, who recently completed his collegiate career, helped lead the Spartans to the Avista-NAIA World Series in his senior season. The Maryland Heights, Mo. native led the team with a .356 average in 236 at-bats. He added 18 doubles, two triples and three home runs while finishing second on the team with 50 runs batted in.

Plant made a seamless transition to shortstop this past season after starting at third base as a junior. Last season, Plant batted .387 in 53 games with 17 doubles, five homers and 44 RBI's.

The Spartans finished the 2017 season 45-16 and earned a trip to the NAIA World Series for the second time in school history. MBU also won the American Midwest Conference regular season title with a 24-6 record.
