Men's Soccer - Sat, Oct. 7, 2017

ST. LOUIS—[BOX SCORE] Missouri Baptist Men's Soccer celebrated Senior Day on Saturday with a 1-0 win over Lyon College at CBC Stadium. Justin Schuttenberg picked a perfect time for his first of the season as his first half goal held up as the winner.

Missouri Baptist came into Saturday's match with a clear plan to play sound defensively and capitalize on the counter attack. They executed the plan to perfection throughout the first 20 minutes and it would eventually pay off in the 23rd minute. Freshman Chase Droege found Schuttenberg at the top of box and the senior fired a shot into lower left corner of the net for his first of the season.

It would be the home side's first of just two shots on goal in the match but it held up the MBU defense was rock solid the rest of the way. The Scots managed 11 total shots in the match but just three required a save from MBU keeper Sam Whittington. The visitor's best opportunity came on an indirect free kick midway through the second half but the attempt sailed wide from inside the Spartan penalty area.

The Spartans honored this year's nine seniors at halftime but it was a special moment at the start of the match that highlighted the day. Despite tearing his ACL a few weeks ago, senior Ramon Contreras was allowed to start the match and participate in the opening kickoff before being subbed off one final time.

"It was good to see the guys come out and give a good effort for our senior day," said Head Coach Jake Alvernia. "We gave our appreciation for them and Lyon was gracious enough to allow us to start Ramon."

Alvernia also recognized the work put forth by Justin Schuttenberg and the team as a whole:

"Justin worked hard and was productive in practice this week and it paid off in the first half. This was another team effort today and a very important win for us."

Missouri Baptist picked up their second consecutive victory and improved to 5-7 overall with a 3-3 mark in AMC play. Lyon dropped 5-3-3 and 4-1-1 in the AMC.

MBU will be back in action on Wednesday at Lindenwood-Belleville. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 pm.
