
The MBU men's basketball team won its second game of the week, with an 81-78 upset over AMC leader and NAIA Division I 7th ranked McKendree University at Muncy Gymnasium on Saturday. The Spartans handed the Bearcats their first AMC Regular Season loss since February 9, 2008.
On Thursday, the Spartans avenged a January loss to Harris-Stowe State University by beating the Hornets at HSSU 82-80 on
Thursday. Four Spartans scored in double digits. Brandon Roberson led all scorers with 23 points, followed by Rondu Stevens with 22 points, Jordan Flora with 12 points, and Kyle Hubbard with 11 points.
On Saturday, the Spartans set out to beat the McKendree Bearcats, who were unbeaten in the American Midwest Conference, with a 20-5 overall record. MBU struggled to keep up with the McKendree Bearcats in the first half, trailing 47-34 as they headed into the locker room. The Bearcats extended the lead to 54-36 two minutes into the second half, before MBU began to cut into the lead. A 25-7 run by the Spartans got them their first lead since early in the first half, when a three-pointer by Brice Scott set the score at 69-68 in favor of MBU with 6:22 to play.
As the final moments ticked, the two teams battled at the free-throw line for the win. With just under 30 seconds remaining, McKendree's RaShad May and Kenny Detmer connected on just one of two attempts apiece to set the score at 79-78 in favor of the Spartans. With 10 seconds remaining, MBU's Kyle Hubbard had more success at the line, connecting on both his attempts to set the score at 81-78. McKendree missed two three-point attempts in the final seconds, securing the victory for MBU.
MBU's Brandon Roberson led all scorers with 30 points, hitting 11-of-12 from the field. He shot a perfect 5-for-5 from behind the arc. Roberson scored 19 of his points in the second half. Kyle Hubbard added 21 points for the Spartans.
Missouri Baptist now shares third place in the American Midwest Conference with Harris-Stowe. Both teams have a 5-5 mark in the AMC, and both are 14-12 overall. McKendree shares first place with Park University, with both having a 9-1 AMC record. The Spartans will return to AMC play on Thursday night, when they host William Woods University.
