
The MBU baseball team opened the 2010 season by going 2-3 in competition at Union University over the weekend. From Thursday through Saturday, the Spartans faced Indiana University-Southeast and Union University in NAIA play.
On Thursday, the Spartans opened the season with a 5-6 loss to the host Bulldogs. MBU trailed 6-0 heading into the sixth innings. Armando Gutierrez and Jon Serafini each drove in a run in the sixth to put MBU on the scoreboard. A three-run homerun by Adrian Martinez in the seventh inning brought the Spartans within one run, but they failed to score again, losing the contest 5-6. Scot Kuhns threw for 4.2 innings to earn the loss for MBU.
On Friday, the Spartans took just five innings to earn a 13-3 victory over IUSE. Rashad Tucker allowed just three hits in earning the win for MBU. Three Spartans hit the ball out of the park; Martinez, Billy Mansfield, and Chris Coleman. Mansfield went 3-for-3 at the plate, driving in a team high four runs. In the second game of the day, the Spartans again lost to Union, this time by a score of 4-7. The Bulldogs scored all their runs in the first two innings. The Spartans used five pitchers in the contest. Starting pitcher Drew Fierebaugh earned the loss.
On Saturday, IUSE played the Spartans closer, but MBU managed to pick up a 7-5 win. Eric Zittel pitched four innings for MBU to earn the win on the mound. The Spartans closed out the weekend with a 3-6 loss to Union. MBU scored three runs in the fourth to tie the game at 3-3, but the Bulldogs quickly answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth to eventually seal the win. Victor Gonzalez threw three innings for the loss.
The Spartans will host Trinity Christian College for noon double headers on Friday and Saturday, February 26-27.
