Women's Soccer - Fri, Apr 2, 2010
The MBU women's soccer team took off their cleats on Sunday, March 28, and stepped onto the court of Saint Louis University High School. Nineteen members of the Lady Spartan program had the opportunity to work with KEEN (Kids Enjoy Exercise Now) in providing one-on-one recreational opportunities for youth with developmental and physical disabilities.

Prior to participating, the MBU athletes went through an orientation, where they had the chance to learn more about the KEEN organization and the wide range of disabilities and life challenges the youth they serve face.

The Lady Spartans then partnered with KEEN to lead the youth, ages five to eighteen, in a number of non-competitive physical activities. The youth and MBU student-athlete "coaches" played parachute games, rode bikes and scooters, played basketball and soccer, and even did the hokey-pokey!

The MBU women's soccer players had a great experience; one they hope to have again.

"The kids really seemed to love it," said MBU junior Michelle Smith. "Not only did they have fun, but it was fun for us, because we got to play and be kids with them. "

Freshman Tasha Whitlock added, "I had the best time with the kids. They easily brightened my day, and I hope we did the same for them."

KEEN is a national, nonprofit volunteer-led organization that provides one-to-one recreational opportunities for children and youth with developmental and physical disabilities at no cost to their families and caregivers. KEEN's mission is to foster the self-esteem, confidence, skills and talents of its athletes through non-competitive activities, allowing young people facing even the most significant challenges to meet their individual goals. You can visit the KEEN St. Louis website at http://keenstlouis.org.
